  • The Blue Fairy Book - Illustrated by H. J. Ford - Volume I

    Andrew Lang, H. J. Ford

Paperback (Pook Press, March 5, 2015)
This book forms part of Andrew Lang's 'Coloured' Fairy Books series – a series of twelve collections of fairy tales, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour, and all in all, 437 tales from a wide array of cultures and countries are presented. Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist and literary critic, with a passion for folkloric story telling. Most of his volumes (including this, the 'Blue Fairy Book') were beautifully illustrated by Henry J. Ford (1860 - 1941), an inordinately talented artist who came to public attention with his illustrations for Lang. The books captured the imagination of British children, and later became worldwide bestsellers in the 1880s and 1890s. This 'Blue Book' contains such classic fairy tales as, 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Cinderella', 'Aladdin', 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Hansel and Gretel', and many more.

From the day that they were first printed, the Lang fairy-tale books of many colors have entertained thousands of boys and girls, as they have also brought pleasure to the many parents who have read these unforgettable classics to their children. In addition to such familiar favorites as ""Jack and the Beanstalk,"" ""Rapunzel,"" ""The Ratcatcher"" (""The Pied Piper""), and ""Snowdrop"" (""Snow White""), The Red Fairy Book contains a wonderful collection of lesser-known tales from French, German, Danish, Russian, and Romanian sources. A tale from Norse mythology recounts the old story of Sigurd and Brynhild; tales by the great Madame d'Aulnoy include ""Graciosa and Percinet"" and ""Princess Rosette""; lesser-known tales from Grimm's collection include ""The Three Dwarfs,"" ""Mother Holle,"" and ""The Golden Goose.""All in all, this collection contains thirty-seven stories, all narrated in the clear, lively prose for which Lang was famous.
